Some folks with a BIG budget want to plant BIG trees and palms to start, and there's nothing wrong with that, but it's very expensive for a number of reasons:
- A professional grower nurtured your large tree or palm for a long time, so you have to pay for years of effort and professional care, e.g. grower may have grown your plant for 10-20 years !!!
- The equipment required to transport is heavy duty and requires skilled operators who earn big wages for their professional work
- More equipment is needed to hoist and lower big trees and palms into their new holes
- Combined equipment charges for one day can easily run $3,000
- You also need a crew to perfectly prepare each hole and properly plant your new trees
- Digging BIG holes in your land very often yields surprises, like severing cables, water lines, etc., so more skilled repair people are frequently needed to put things back right
Here are some pictures of an all day effort to plant a single Florida Live Oak here in Fort Lauderdale
Helping dig the hole:
EXACTLY measuring hole depth is critical
Here comes the tree from 200 miles away
Crane used is rated at 70 tons
Initial coordination of equipment and operators
Unwrapping the oak tree

Preparing to lift the tree off the truck
Lifting tree upright, making sure straps hold well
Crane operator lifts tree off nursery truck
Lowering tree into planting hole
Making sure depth is perfect
Breaking away and removing the lumber pot
Soil and water added
Lots of men, lots of equipment, lots of time to grow, professional work to properly plant. So, if you're going to get some BIG PLANTS, you might as well get several
